Mets Minors Recap: Baty Homers Twice, Binghamton Sweeps Doubleheader (2024)

After a rain-soaked Friday night where only one Mets affiliate played, Saturday saw seven games from the full-season squads. After only hitting one extra-base hit in August before Saturday, Brett Baty went deep in both halves of Syracuse’s doubleheader. They were his first home runs since July 23rd when he sent two out of the park in one game.

Triple-A

Game 1: Worcester Red Sox (53-59) 5, Syracuse Mets (63-48) 4 In 7 Innings

Baty launched his first homer since July 23rd and collected just his second extra base-hit in August. On the other side of the ball, hemade a few nice plays at second base, showing his progression and comfort at the new position.

• RHP Blade Tidwell (5.87 ERA) 5 2/3 IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 88 pitches/54 strikes

Tidwell’s crux continues to be long innings plagued by walks and giving up home runs. He has now allowed 15 homers, eclipsing his number from last season in six fewer appearances.

Baty smoked his second homer of the day as Syracuse won game two of their doubleheader against Worcester. Luisangel Acuña added two doubles of his own, surpassing his extra-base hit count for July in only six games this month. Notably, one of the doubles came off a softly-hit groundball through the infield – which, Acuña was able to stretch a single into a double – à la, Jose Reyes.

• RHP Mike Vasil (5.31 ERA) 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 89 pitches/64 strikes
• LHP Matt Gage 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Vasil has had a very impressive second half of the minor league so far. After posting a 3.38 ERA in July, Vasil has continued to pound the zone with strikes while finding his strikeout stuff.

Gage has been elite since coming over to the Mets organization; he has not conceded a run in 8.1 innings.

Double-A

Game 1: Somerset Patriots (53-52) 2, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (54-48) 4 In 7 Innings

The Rumble Ponies started their doubleheader against Somerset with a win led by Rowdey Jordan‘s second-inning two-RBI double. Jordan hopes to bounce back after a tough month of July, where he batted .145 and had a .652 OPS.

Geber shut down the Yankee’s Double-A affiliate, allowing seven baserunners in his five innings of shutout ball. Like Justin Jarvis, Geber has been used as a starter in Binghamton and as a utility man in Syracuse. He has excelled at both levels, boasting a combined 2.98 ERA for the season.

Jaylen Palmer‘s solo home run in the fifth inning was all Binghamton needed to beat Somerset and sweep Saturday’s doubleheader. Despite only picking up five hits, four of them were for extra bases, though the Ponies went 0-for-4 with RISP.

Pintaro has had a quietly great season after being signed in early June. Before being promoted to Binghamton, he had a 2.50 ERA in 36 innings with High-A Brooklyn. After being roughed up in his first start in Double-A last week, Pintaro bounced back with a gem on Saturday, throwing five innings of scoreless ball, allowing only three hits and striking out five.

High-A

The Cyclones offense was held in check by Hudson Valley in their 3-0 loss on Saturday. Brooklyn only mustered three hits, with Chris Suero knocking their only one for extra bases.

Baro has been the most consistent bat for a bad St. Lucie team this season, collecting two more hits on Saturday and an RBI. Since he will likely finish the season with Low-A St. Lucie, his power development will be vital to adjusting well next year with High-A Brooklyn, Maimonides Park in Coney Island, known for being tough on lefty batters.

Bridge Camp continued on Saturday with the Mets hosting the Cardinals. First round selection Carson Benge picked up two hits (a single and a double) in his Mets organizational debut.
